The Governor formally opened Parliament to-day by delivering the usual speech. We have been favoured with a copy of the same which will be published to-morrow. Great importance is to be attached to improving the industrial resources of the colony, prominent amongst which is mentioned the mining interest, the promotion of settlement, and the advancement of local products and manufactures.
The first meeting of the newly-elected Hospital Committee takes place this evening. The principal business, we understand, will be to elect officers and subcommittees.
The Union Company’s steamer Mahinapua is announced to leave Greymouth for Wellington and southern ports on Monday next, instead of Saturday. The amateur dramatic entertainment at the Odfellows Hall, Stafford, last night, in aid of the Catholic Church at Stafford proved a great success. The Kumara amateurs and the St. Patrick’s Brass Band went down by special coach yesterday afternoon. They were accompanied by the Rev. Fathers Devoy, Carew, and Walshe. On arriving at Goldsborough the Band alighted and walked through the town playing selections, and did the same at Stafford. The hall was crowded during the performance. The amateurs and band returned home at about two o’clock this morning, being piloted by the skilful jehu Angus Cameron.
The Rev. Father Devoy, who for some little time back has been engaged in the work of collecting money in aid of St. Patrick’s College, now being erected at Wellington, has received instructions from Bishop Redwood to proceed to Timaru with the least possible delay, for the purpose of relieving the Rev. Father M‘Guinness, whose health has completely broken down. He was formerly in charge of the Greymouth district, but, the Argus says, was removed to Timaru on account of the very poor health he had there, and with the hope that the change would prove beneficial, which, unfortunately, has not been the case. In consequence of the mandate of his Bishop, Father Devoy had to put aside for the present all idea of canvassing Reefton for subscriptions for St. Patrick’s College. He expresses great satisfaction at the success of his mission so far, and the generous way in which the appeal -in aid of the College has been responded to. Up to the present he has collected £350, £250 of which was donated by fewer than half a dozen persons.
The Rev. Fathers Devoy, Carew, Walshe, and O’Donnell rode down to Hokitika this morning, to be present at an interesting annual festival at the Convent of St. Colmnkille this evening. Saddlery and harness may be obtained or old harness repaired at Mr Booth’s, who has opened a small shop in Main street, next the Republic Hotel.
A very old Greymouth resident, Charles Standly, died at the Grey River Hospital last Friday morning, after a short illness. The Argus states that deceased had not been enjoying very good health for years back, and had been a patient at the hospital a few years ago suffering from an acute liver disease. He, however, pulled through on that occasion, though he was never a sound man since. Deceased had resided in Greymouth since the very earliest days, and filled various positions in the town, and at one time and another doing a good deal of work for the Customs Department. He was 47 years of age, a native of London, and had been ill only about three weeks.
