The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 1884.

The poll for the election of a Committee of Management for the Kumara Hospital took place on Saturday between the hours of 12 noon and Bin the evening. There were two polling places, one in Kumara and one at Dillman's Town. There were polled about twice the number of votes recorded last year. The following are the names of the candidates, the votes recorded at each polling-booth, and the total number of votes for each candidate. The first thirteen are elected :

The first meeting of the new Committee is appointed to be held at the Town Hall to-morrow evening, at 8 o'clock.

The London Times annnounces—though later intelligence states that the rumour is not confirmed—that China has at last declared war against France, and is making active preparations to prosecute hostilities.

The great sculling race between Hanlan and Beach for £IOOO and the Championship of the World took place on the Parramatta River championship course, near Sydney, on Saturday last, and resulted in a victory for Beach. The length of the course is 3 miles 330 yards. The time taken was 20mins. 29secs., which, taking the foul that occurred into account, was very quick, the fastest time being by Trickett, in his match with Beach on the same course in July last year, who, aided by a strong westerly wind and ebb tide, finished the race in 20mins. 15secs. The umpire disallowed the foul claimed by Hanlan. Hanlan has taken his defeat in good humour. It is thought in Sydney that another match will be arranged. Commander Edwin wired the following message to-day at 12.24 p.m. : "Bad weather may be expected after 12 hours from now, between north and east, and south-east, with rain. Glass fall within ten hours." The entertainment for the benefit of Louis Lousich takes place at the Adelphi Theatre on Friday evening next, 22nd inst. The programme is published today. The first part will consist of concerted music, aided by the Kumara String Band, and for the second part will be performed the one-act comedy of " The Quiet Family," a most amusing piece.
