All England was resumed and concluded at the Oval to-day. The first innings of the Englishmen closed for 346. The highest scorers were Scotton, 90 : Read 117. With the exception of Mr A. G. Steel, Scotton, and Mr W, W. Read, none of the Eleven made any stand against the howling of Palmer and Spofforth. When Steel and Scotton were in partnership they became well set, and runs were freely scored, Soot-

ton being in excellent form, Steel, however, was taken leg before wicket when, he had contributed 31. Read, on joining Scotton, succeeded in adding materially to the score, and between the two a good display of batting was afforded the spectators. Scotton was caught, however, when he had run up a well played 90. Those who followed failed to remain long at the wickets, but Head continued to bat splendidly and maintained his stand till the close of the innings, when he was bowled. His score standing at 117.
