Notwithstanding that Lord Edraoud Fitzmaurice in the House of Commons on Thursday night denied the reported seizure of Kelung by Admiral Courbet, the (epo.it cabled by Reuter that day turns out to be correct, and its truthfulness is now fully confirmed. It has also transpired that Patenotre, the French Ambasssador to China, has notified the Chinese Government that the occupation of Kelung, an important coaling station in the island of Formosa, off Foo-Chow, will continue until the demands of France for satisfaction on account of the Langson affair have been satisfied. Now that the original extortionate demand by France has dwindled down from £20,000,000 to £3,000,000, or just about twice as ranch as China offered, there is some prospect of the latter Power agreeing to pay this sum rather than go to war or lose Formosa island, and have FooChow bombarded by the French fleet now in Chinese waters.
