The ninth session of the New Zealand Parliament was opened by Commission this afternoon. The Commissioners were the Hon. Sir W. Fitzherbert, and Hons. R. Oliver, G. M. Waterhouse, and Sir G. Whitmore. His Excellency the Governor will probably attend and deliver the usual speech to-morrow afternoon. Messrs Seddon and Be van, M.H.Rs., have done some rapid traveling to get to Wellington at the opening of Parliament. Leaving this town by Tuesday morning's coach, on their arrival the same evening at the Bealey, they found the Ringarooma was announced to leave Lyttelton for Wellington next day (Wednesday) at 6 p.m., and to catch this boat they must be at Christchurch railway station at 5.30 p.m. To do this they hired a buggy at the Bealey and started at 3.30 yesterday morning, favoured by a full moon, four hours in advance of the coach. They had telegraphed to Mr Cassidy to have another horse in readiness at Springfield, and on arrival there they drove right on to Christchurch, another 40 miles, succeeded in catching the Rotomahana at Lyttelton, and arrived in Wellington at 9 o'clock this morning—just two days from Kumara, and probably the quickest journey ever made between the two places. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council takes place this evening. The threatened seizure by Admiral Courbet of Kelung, a port and town in north of the island of Formosa, as part guarantee for the indemnity demanded by France as a reparation for the Langson affair is to-day reported to have been accomplished. This step is a very important one regarded in the event of an actual war between France and China. Coal abounds at Kelung, and is largely shipped from thence; so that by this seizure France will be able to supply her navy in the China Sea. The island of Formosa is on the south-east coast of China, opposite the province of Fo-kien, from which it is distant about 90 miles. Its length is about 237 miles, and average breadth 70 miles. Tai-wan-foo is the capital of Formosa ; it is situated on a large plain three miles from the southwest coast of the island.
Prince George of Wales, second son of the Prince of Wales, -was on Tuesday last invested with the Order of the Garter.
The remains of the late Mr Edward Butler were followed to the grave yesterday (the Argus states) by such an imposing crowd of mourners as is seldom seen anywhere, and such as has never been seen in Greymouth. Mourners came from Reef ton and the intermediate places, from north and south, to attend the funeral ; and many more would have helped to swell the cortege had vehicles offered to convey them. A number of miners, friends of deceased, walked distances of ten and twenty miles, through being unable to find conveyances. The Mayor (F. C. Dnpre), Mr A. R. Guinness, Mr Clifford, and Mr Griffen acted as pall bearers. Then came the hearse, which was followed by over 400 on foot. These were followed by nine loaded vehicles, and bringing up the rear were 25 horsemen, making over 500 altogether. The Irish National League ball and supper will be held at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow night. An excellent proi r.■•mil. ■ of dances has been prepared. J lany visitors are expected, and, with the good music provided, a most enjoyable night may be guaranteed to those who attend.
The Wellington correspondent of the Press telegraphs on the Ist instant:— "The opinion is strengthening here that no attempt will be made by the Government to rely upon the alleged disunion of the Opposition, but that if cm the arrival of their supporters in Wellington it is found there is no material change in the present position, they will at once tender their resignation and inform Parliament of the fact at the earliest possible moment, throwing upon the Opposition the onus of forming a Government. I have reason to believe, however, that whatever the probabilities may be, no definite decision has yet been come to on the subject." Lawyers are again well represented in Parliament. The list includes the names of Messrs Stout, Harper, Tole, Menteath, Guinness, Holmes, Fitzherbert, Conolly, Gillies, Garrick, O'Rorke and Samuel.
