The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1884.

The negotiations between the French and Chinese Ambassadors for the settlement of the Langson affair have been broken off. It is believed in Foo-Chow that war with France is imminent. The English commander at that port is landing sailors to protect Europeans, and Chinese merchants have sold their fleets to Americans. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, at the usual hour. By some mistake of the London agents the usual supply of Home papers to the Literary Institute have not arrived. We understand, however, that the committee have taken steps to remedy the mistake as far as possible by obtaining them from Hokitika. An inquest was held at the Greymouth Hospital, yesterday afternoon, before F. Bird, Esq., Coroner, and a full jury, on the body of the late John Hall, who was found last Saturday night lying in an insensible condition in the bush at Marsden, where he had been working for Mr Russell. He was taken to the Greymouth Hospital, where he lingered till six o'clock on Monday morning. Hall was better known as "The Swinger," than by his proper name. The verdict returned was in accordance with the evidence, and was in effect that deceased came by his death through injuries received while falling a tree. We regret to learn that Mr George Fisher, Mayor of Wellington, and who has recently been elected to Parliament for Wellington South, is seriously ill, suffering from brain fever. Mr Fisher was last year the chief reporter for Hansard. Owing to the National League ball taking place on Friday next, the quadrille assemblies of Kumara and Dillman's will hold their weekly meetings to-night, instead of to-morrow night. The Lyell Times of the 2nd inst. says : " No trace of the missing man Thomas Mahoney has been discovered, and, indeed, in view of the sudden and mysterious manner in which he disappeared, together with the circumstance that, when last seen, the unfortunate fellow was partly demented through the effects of drink ; the conclusion seems inevitable that he has perished long before now, either in the cold wet bush, or else with a headlong stumble been precipitated far below into the dark treacherous depths of the Buller river, whose icy clasp has been the last and only winding sheet of so many victims." Contractors are reminded that tenders for extending Fifth street and maintaining the streets of the Borough close tomorrow evening. Good Resolutions.—At the commencement of every new year hundreds and thousands of our young men—and old as well—form resolutions for their guidance for the coming year. Many keep them, while others break them. To such we wish to give a word ,of advice. In order

to sustain your determination of leading a better life in the future you should use Hop Bitters. The judicious use of Hop Bitters strengthens, cleanses, and purifies the stomach, bowels, blood, liver, nerves, and kidneys, and is just what you want to build up and invigorate yourself.—Greenbush Dem. Read The Tidy Housewife.—The careful, tidy housewife, when giving her house its spring cleaning, should bear in mind that the dear inmates are more precious than houses, their systems need cleansing, by purifying the blood, regulating the stomach and bowels, and she should know that there is nothing that will do it so surely as Hop Bitters, the purest and best of all medicines.
