BILLIARDS.-GREAT MATCH FOR £4O.
Tho match between William Cook and William Mitchell (5000 points up) for £2OO a side, terminated in the St. James's Banqaeting Hall, London, on May 31, and resulted in a somewhat easy win for Mitchell. At the close of play on the previous day the state of the game was:—Mitchell, 4604; Cook, 4020, the latter being in the midst of the unfinished break of 80 (23 spots). When play was resumed Cook continued his break, which he made into 149 (44 spots) before he broke down; and Mitchell having done very little in reply, he followed on with 86 (27 spots) and 115 (9 and 27 spots). Mitchell then put in 65 (20 spots), and 49 (13 spots); and after Cook made 33 (7 spots) the marker called the game—Mitchell, 4746; Cook, 4328. This proved to be Cook's last chance, however, as Mitchell in his next attempt obtained the necessary position for spot play at 4782, aud ran right ont with an unfinished break of 254 (73 spots), an easy winner by 672 points. Full game: Mitchell, 5000; Cook, 4328. The men afterwards made another match on similar terms for £IOO a side, to take place within six weeks.
