GANGER AND SKIN DISEASES.
A New York paper writes :—Cancer and skin diseases are increasing with alarming rapidity in both America and Great Britain. Iu New York city, especially, the number of persons afflicted is lai'ge, and it is estimated that fully 15,000 new cases of skin disease appear there annually. In 1869 there were 304 deaths from cancer in New York, being a little over one per hundred of deaths from all causes ; in 1879 there were 572 deaths, or a little over two per hundred of all deaths—that is, in ten years the proportion of deaths from cancer had nearly doubled, one death out of every 50 being from this dreadful disease. In 1860 there were 657 deaths from cancer, 2,06 per cent, of all deaths. In this latter year cancer actually caused more deaths than scarlet fever, this being a very light year, with 618 deaths from the latter disease. In 1882 the city’s mortality tables showed 731 deaths from cancer, or more than two daily. During these 14 years 6843 persons died of cancer in New York city.
