THE LATE DR. HOCHSTETTER.
The death of Dr. Hochstetter, the eminent Austrian naturalist and geologist, has some interest for New Zealand colonists, the name of the deceased being attached to one of the bsst books on this colony ever published. Dr. Hochstetter was sent out by the Austrian Government with the Novaro expedition, and on the completion of its work he remained behiud in Auckland in 1859. He spent six mouths exploring the King country in the North Island, and a portion of Nelson and Canterbury in the South Island. On his return to his own country he wrote the work known as Hochstetter's New Zealand, which was published first in German and afterwards in English. This gave the results of his inquiry into the general and natural history of New Zealand, its native matters and geology, and is even now recognised as one of the best standard scientific works on this colony. After this the doctor was appointed Professor of Geology in the principal school of mines in Austria, and also received the appointment of head tutor to the Crown Prince, whose entire education he was commissioned to superintend. During tho last few years he has acted as Director of the Great School of Mines at Vienna. In 1870 he was elected an honorary member of the New Zealand Institute. As the number of these is limited to 30, Dr. Hochstetter's death creates a vacancy.—Exchange.
