ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY BREAK BY PEALL.
Again has the rising English player Peall beaten the record, and this time with a break of extraordinary magnitude. We cannot do better than give the London Sportsman’s account of the f.at:—“Last night, May 19, W. J. Peall and W. Mitchell played an exhibition match of 1000 points, all in. Mitchell conceded 100 points to Peall. Play began at a quarter past 8, Peall opening with a miss in baulk, which Mitchell replied to by scoring 10 and failing at the red on the spot. With Peall 116, Mitchell 21, the Brixtonian got on the spot and ran up a. break of 41 (12 consecutive spots). The. leader was then inactive for a few strokes, and Mitchell, by the aid of 24, 22, and 11, brought his total to 99 against Peall’s 175. The latter, after running in off the white in the middle pocket, made 16, and then got into position, and he pocketed the red 32 times, his effort of 112 including 26 and four consecutive spots. Mitchell replied with 45 (fourteen spots), breaking down owing to a miss-cue. Peall at the next attempt again got in position, and after making about 30, ran up the large break of 283 and this effort included 83 consecutive spots, the totals being Peall, 570; Mitchell, 144. After a miss by both, Mitchell put on 37 (11 spots), and breaking down at an easy stroke, the game progressed slowly for a time. When the score stood— Peall, 590; Mitchell, 200 ; the former got on to his favourite stroke, and playing in grand style, ran out a winner with an unfinished break of 411. Continuing his unfinished break, Peall ratttled the red down in splendid form, and at one hour 56 minutes from the start he had passed Mitchell’s break of of 1055, a result recived with loud applause, and not until Peall had manipulated the extraordinary break of 1960 did he fail. His break included 548 consecutive spot strokes. Mitchell’s record break of 1839 was beaten after two hours’ play. The game from start to finish occupied two hours 27 minutes.”
