Serious rioting between Orangemen and Catholics has taken place at Cumberland. The fighting was very serious, and resulted in one man being shot and fifty wounded. The disturbance was only quelled by the intervention of a large body of police. Intelligence has been received that a number of Abyssinian chiefs are about to visit England for the purpose of bringing an elephant to the Queen as a present from King Johannes. (Received July 15, 1 p.m.) Evening. The discussion in the House of Lords on Lord Wemyss's motion proposing a compromise on the Franchise question has been postponed until Thursday. In the House of Commons to-day Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice, UnderSecretary for foreign Affairs, announced that intelligence had reached the Government that General Gordon was still at Khartoum and holding his own against the besiegers. The garrison made constant sallies from the town, with various success.

Active parleying is now proceeding at Shanghai between the representative of the Chinese Government and Patenotre, the French Minister to China, with a view to arrive at an amicable settlement of the difficulty which has arisen in connection with the attack on French troops at Langson, on the Ton qui n frontier. Paris, July 13. Reports to hand from Marseilles and Toulon state that the deaths from cholera yesterday amounted to 57 at the former place and 36 at the latter. (Received July 15, 1 p.m.) Alexandria, July 14. An outbreak of cholera has occurred here, but it has not yet assumed any alarming proportions.
