[united press association.] Auckland, June 16. The barmaid at the Qneen street Hotel attempted suicide last night bytaking poieon. She had been upstairs, and on coming down found her inamorata fooling with auother girl. High words, it is said, ensued, aud it ended by her subsequently taking poison, or what is believed to be poison. Emetics of mustard and warm water were successfully administered to the rash girl. A serious panic occurred at Abbott's Opera House last night. Mr Brown was lecturing on the Church of Rome, and the place was packed, when a number of youths in the vestibule cried out « Fire," and- tramped heavily down stairs. Mr Brown attempted to quiet the audience, but crowds rushed to the doors although some of the people remained quiet. Numbers of womou fainted, and some persons were slij-htly injured. A young min named Anderson died suddenly at the Governor Browne Hotel.
Richard Lisage M'Gee, son of the well known racehorse proprietor of that name, died somewhat suddenly from tetanus, which arose from what was at first supposed to be a trivial injury to his knee.
GtSBORNE, June 16. The result of the polling for the East Coast election is as follows :—Locke, 439 ; Gannon, 274 ; Rees, 269. The returns from Tologa Bay and other places are yet to come, but cannot affect the result. There was a large crowd in the street. Mr Locke thanked them from the balcony of the Masonic Hotel, and called for three cheers for the other candidates.
