[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, June 11. As the southern express train was passing Mosgiel it struck a man on horseback who attempted to cross in front of it. The horse was thrown clear of the line, and the man after some search was found on the cow-
catcher of the engiue. He proved to be Mr Alexander Todd. June 12. Mr Todd, who was knocked down on the railway by an engine, has died from his injuries. The Kaitangata coal mine, which was opened yesterday in ths presence of some of the directors, has caught fire again, probably through the influx of air, and will have to be closed again.
Christchurch, June 12. Some excellent specimens of copper ore have been brought from the Malvern district, and sanguine hopes are entertained of a payable copper mine being opened there.
Wanganui, June 11. .The Chief Kawana Paipai died at Pntiki, He was a very staunch and loyal friend to the Europeans during the Maori troubles in the early days. He is supposed to be over 90 years of age.
Wellington, June 11. A. F. Duncan, who was injured a fortnight ago by falling down the hold of the Hinomoa, succumbed to his injuries to-day.
