GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. ♦- THE ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. - AMENDMENT BY MR. STEWARD. DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT. EXPECTED DISSOLUTION OF PARLIAMENT. [united press association.] Wellington, June 10. The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. Mr Newman moved the Address-in-Reply, which Mr M, W. Green seconded. Mr Steward objected to the speech rather for what it omitted than for anything it contained. The country could not trust Ministers with the carrying out of their own proposals, and the best thing they could do would be to retire from office. He moved as an addition to the reply that the House has no confidence in the Government. Mr Levestam seconded the amendment. On Macandrew’s motion, the debate was adjourned till to-morrow. The House rose at 10.15 p.m. June 11. Last night, after considerable debate, the Premier asked for an adjournment of the discussion, but the Opposition declined to accede to the request, and on a division being taken, the resolution against the Government was carried by 41 to 32. Mr Sutton then moved as an addition to the resolution that the Governor be asked to dissolve Parliament. The debate was adjourned on the motion of Mr Shaw.
