[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. >-■—< THE PROJECTED CONFERENCE OF EUROPEAN POWERS. PARLEYING STILL PROCEEDING WITH FRANCE. HOSTILE ATTITUDE OP THE ARABS NEAR SOUAKIM. LANDING A BODY OF BRITISH SAILORS. FLIGHT OF THE REBELS. (Received May 21, 1 a.ra.) London, May 20. In the House of Commons last night, the Premier made a statement regarding the projected Conference of European Powers upon the Egyptian question. The Government, Mr Gladstone said, adhered to the basis upon which the conference was to be held, as originally announced. Parleying was still proceeding on the subject with France, and as soon as an agreement had been come to with that Power concerning the question under discussion, the other European Powers would he consulted. Telegrams received this morning from Souakim state that the rebels in that neighborhood are again assuming a hostile attitude, and during several hours yesterday afternoon and evening, continuous firing upon the town was maintained. A body of sailors at length landed from the British war vessels lying off the town, and the Arabs then fled.
The cargo of frozen mutton, comprising about 9000 carcases, on board the ship Marlborough, from Port Chalmers,, is reported to be in prime condition, [special to press association.] London, May 16. The military guard at the Birmingham Gaol has been increased so as to prevent any attempt to rescue the Fenian prisoners confined therein. This step has been taken in consequence of reports received by the authorities that the friends of the prisoners would probably make an effort to rescue them. M. Ferry, the French Premier, expresses his indignation at Prince Bismarck’s accusation that he is conniving at the betrayal of the military secrets of Germany.
