GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Grey County Council held a special meeting at the County Offices, Greymonth, on Tuesday evening; present Messrs Guinness (chairman), Foley, Clifford, Taylor, Warren, Marshall, M'Kechnie, and Ryall. Tenders for the second section of the road from Cobden to Brunnerton were opened. Those of Thomas O'Donnell for the road only, £290, and B. Maguire for the bridge only, £57, were accepted. The highest tender for the road only was £521 15s, and, for the Bridge only, £9O. The highest tender for the road and bridge, in one contract, was £BOI 3s 4d, and the lowest £405 4s.

The Chairman called attention to the fact that an epidemic existed in the neigborhood of Paroa, and he suggested that the matter should be inquired into and reported upon by the medical gentleman (Dr. Smith) who had attended the cases in the Paroa district, with the view of preventing the spread of the disease.—Cr. Foley thought there could be no doubt as to the existence of an epidemic disease, and it behoved the Council to do what it could to put a stop to the inroads of the disease, even if it took the last shilling they had. It was resolved that Dr. Smith be requested to report upon the sanity condition of Paroa and Brunnerton. A letter was read from Patrick Brennan, Chairman of the Inangahua County County Council, claiming a sum of money (£lO5 17s Id) from the Grey County, alleged to be illegally paid to this county. Also, the reply of A. R. Guinness, Chairman of the Grey County Council, to same, in which he refused to admit the justness of the claim.—The claim turned on a question of the boundary between the two counties.—Letter received, and Chairman's letter in reply approved. Letter from P. Brennan, claiming £265 from the Grey County in respect to the abolition of tolls. Letter received, and amonnt ordered to be paid. The balance-sheet of the County was certified to as having been duly audited and found correct.

The Council then proceeded with the consideration of by-laws relating to licensed vehicles. Resolved that the licenses be issued yearly, half-yearly, and quarterly. Resolved that every four-wheeled vehicle drawn by four horses or less pay £lO. Resolved that every vehicle drawn by one horse, pay £lO.

The license for three-horse vehicles was fixed at £7 10s. The hours were fixed between 4.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. This concluded the business of the special meeting, and the Council proceeded with the ordinary business.

A letter was received from C. E. Ohlsen, Cape Terrace, in reference to depositing tailings on his claim. Resolved that the application be granted, provided he carry out the work to the satisfaction of the Road Overseer. The Council resumed its sitting at two o'clock yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon ; present—Councillors Guinness (chairman), Foley, Clifford, Warren, Marshall, M'Kechnie, Ryall, Taylor, and M'Beath.

The Road Overseer's report recommended that two new spans should be erected over the New River near Hohonu road.—The Chairman moved that plans and specifications be prepared for submitting to Government with the view of obtaining a subsidy.—Seconded by Cr. Warren, and carried.

The Chairman announced that it was the intention of the Council to strike a rate of a penny half-penny in the £, payable on the 19th July next. A resolution to that effect was duly moved and carried.

Cr." Foley moved—" That the Road Overseer be instructed to report as to the cost of a footbridge to be placed on the Greenstone Creek on the Lake Brunner Track."—Carried.

Cr. Foley moved—" That a track be made from Greenstone Road to Payne's Gully." The Road Overseer said the track would cost about £so.—Carried.

Council adjourned to Tuesday, 17th June next.
