The excitement which has been manifested in this city since the news of the failure of the Oriental Bank Corporation was received here has now calmed down. The passengers ex steamship Rome, who have been in quarantine since the arrival of the vessel, were liberated today. Melbourne, May 6. It has transpired that John Pender, M.P. [for Wick district, Sutherlandshire], well known in London as Chairman of the Eastern Telegraph Company, and its branches, recently made inquiries in this city by telegraph regarding the prospects of establishing a Bank on the ground hitherto occupied by the Oriental Bank Corporation. Arrived, this morning, the Union steamship Te Anau, from the Bluff. Sailed, this morning, the Waihora, for the Bluff. (Received May 8, 0.55 a.m.) The trial of R. B. Fletcher, late mine manager of Sandhurst, on further charges of embezzlement was continued to-day, and again resulted in the acquittal of the prisoner. (Received May 8, 12.40 p.m.) Adelaide, May 8. It is rumoured that a vote of want of confidence in the Government will be moved in the House of Assembly soon after the meeting of the new Parliament.
