THE LATE MR. TANCRED.
At the sitting of the Supreme Court of Christchurch, on Monday last, his Honor Mr Justice Johnston spoke as follows concerning the late Mr Tancred ; “ Gentlemen of the Special Jury— Before we proceed to the business of the day I cannot refrain from alluding to the great loss the colony, and this particular portion of it especially, has just sustained by the decease of a gentleman who in former times frequently assisted in the administration of Justice in this place as a grand and a special jury-man. As a member of Colonial and Provinvincisl Legislatures, as a Minister, as a Chancellor of the University, and in various positions of honor and responsibility, Mr Tancred devoted a great portion of his life to the service of the community. He leaves behind him an unspotted reputation as a private gentleman and as a servant of the public, and he will be recognised by all his fellow colonists as one of those men of education and honor among the early settlers who have helped to procure for the colony the good name which, I believe, it bears in the world, and which I sincerely hope it never will forfeit.”
