WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council met at the Council Chambers, Hokitika, on Wednesday last, at 2 p.m.- present—the Chairman (P. Dungan, Esq.), Messrs Gumming, Grimmond, Rose, M‘Goldrick, M'Whirter, Jack, and Hirter. The minutes were confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. The following particulars of business of interest to residents of this district is from the West Coast Times:— Letter from Dr. Keiran, stating that a serious case of diphtheria at Rima had been brought under his notice that day.—Referred to the Medical Officer. Letter from Messrs Martin and Morris, applying for permission to work a portion of the old Waimea road.— Referred to the Chairman. Letter from Mr M‘Whirter, forwarding copies of resolutions carried at a public meeting at Stafford, touching the health of the district, and the necessity for cleansing the township.—Received. The Chairman stated that a report on the subject would be read. Letter from Messrs Watson and party, and 26 others, asking that the old Larrikin’s track might be closed for traffic.—Received, and ordered to be considered with Mr Kerr’s report. KUJIARA BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. Mr M'Whirter moved, “ That the County Council be represented on the Kumara Benevolent Society, by E. J. Seddon, Esq., M.ll.R.”—Carried. INSPECTOR OF LICENSES. The Chairman moved, “That Mr E, Dale be appointed Rate and Dog Tax collector for the Arahura, Kanieri and Totara ridings; also, Inspector, (1) Of Yehicles, (2) Hawkers’ licenses, (3) Slaughter Houses, (4) Nuisances, (5) Chinese miners' rights, and (6) under Food Adulteration Act all in same ridings, on terms and conditions set forth in Finance Committee’s report as agreed to on the 7th April, 1884.” This officer was absolutely required. The more energetically he worked, the more money he would receive. -Mr M‘Goldrick seconded the resolution. Mr Gumming moved an amendment that the per centage be 20 per cent,— Ihe motion as amended by Mr Gumming was carried. ' tiffin borer. The Chairman nmvvd, “That the clauses of the repm- f :.h - 12th March
relating to the Tiffin Boring Machine, be now considered.' 7 —Consideration of motion held over until next meeting. GOLDSBOROUGH POST OFFICE. Mr M'Whirter moved, “ That the postal authorities be requested to establish a money order office at the Goldsborough Post Office ; also to cause a bi-weekly Christchurch coach mail bag to he made up at Stafford and Goldsborough to be sent on direct from those towns by the Christchurch coach.” Carried. ASSISTANT ENGINEER. Mr Hirter moved, “ That Mr Wylde be appointed assistant engineer and surveyor to the County Council at a salary of £— per annum.—He was sure that there was too much work for Mr Kerr to do.—Mr Gumming seconded pro forma. He was astonished at this resolution seeing that Mr Kerr had not complained of being overworked.—Mr Seddou moved an amendment that any extra work required by the Council be given to Mr Wylde, at the remuneration of £4 a week, while ho was employed. At present Mr Kerr could-not oveitake his work,—Mr M'Whirter seconded.—Finally the matter was left in the hands of the Chairman. ROAD MAINTENANCE. Mr Hirter moved, “That the County Engineer for the Arabura riding, and the road overseers for the Kanien, Totara, and Okurito ridings be requested to sub-divide in suitable sections for the purpose of letting the same in contract for maintenance, all district roads, by-roads and goldfields tracks, such to be returnable to the County Chairman's office by 7th June next.”—Carried after being amended so as to instruct the county officers to report on the matter. RIMU RECEIVER. The Chairman moved, “That the Government bo requested to appoint a receiver of gold revenue at Rimu.”— Carried. SCRUB. Mr Gumming moved, “That the scrub on the sides of County roads be removed.” Mr M'Whirter seconded the motion, which was carried. FINANCIAL. The Finance Committee’s report was adopted after considerable discussion, when the meeting adjourned.
