The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1884.
The festival of the Jewish Passover commences at sunset this evening (Nisan 15, year 5044), and ends at sunset on the 17 th Ajjril.
We observed several members of the Hospital F6te Committee were busily engaged canvassing the town to-day for articles for the fancy goods and curiosity stall, which will form a great attraction on Monday next at the fete in the Recreation Ground for the benefit of the Hospital. They will continue the work of canvassing to-morrow, and all persons who have any articles to contribute are requested to have them in readiness when the Committee may call. Many ladies are busily engaged in preparing fancy and useful articles ; some of these may now be seen at the repository at Mr Burger's. The Committee will not refuse anything, for some articles which are of no use to present owners may be highly prized by other persons, and so the world wags on, and all are benefitted. But look up the articles, and think of the good cause. The Secretary desires to acknowledge the receipt of £2 2s from Mr Duncan M'Lean, of Greymouth, towards the funds of the fete. There will be a meeting of the Committee to-morrow, at 8.30 p.m. The Treasurer of the Hospital Committee desires to acknowledge the receipt of a donation from Messrs W. and J. Johnston, ironmongers, Hokitika. The donation was unsolicited. At the meeting of the members of the Blue Ribbon movement at the Templars' Hall, Dillman's, on Monday last, Mr F. Barrowman in the chair, a committee of twelve members was elected to promote the objects and extend the operations of the fraternity. T. Connell, Esq., and J. O'Hagan, Esqs., J.Ps., took their seats on the bench in the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning to hear a charge of assault laid, upon the information of Edward Haylock, against Michael Tracey, both of the Christchurch road. There was no appearance of either party, and the case was accordingly struck out. The Wesleyan annual tea meeting will take place in the Public Hall to-morrow evening. A friendly rifle match will take place on the Kumara rifle range on Friday next (Good Friday), between ten men of the Ist Westland Rifles and an equal number of the Kumara Rifles. The names of the local team are as follow :—Lieut. Davies, Lieutenant Borlase, Sergt. Coutts, Corporal Jones, Corporal Keller, Volunteers Sampson, Stennard, Evenden, Schulstad, and Smith ; emergency men—Volunteers Hopkins, Stevenson, Ellery; who are all requested to be ready at 9.30 a.m. sharp on that day. Dr. MacCarthy, Graduate in Arts, Medicine, Surgery, and Midwifery, of Trinity College, Dublin, and Gold Medalist, &c, can be consulted at Gilbert Stewart's Hotel this evening and tomorrow. The Robin Hood Consultation on the Christchurch Antumn Handicap will be drawn on Saturday next. The local agent, we understand, has a few tickets left, which must be applied for early to be secured.
