The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1884.

The Christchurch coach left the Bealey this morning at the usual hour, but, owing probably to the rivers being high with the welcome rain, has probably not been able to cross the Smooth Wainihinihi. There was no sign of its arrival at the time we went to press, 4.30 p.m. The sale of town allotments within the Education Reserve took place at the Court House yesterday. The sales were effected by Mr H. L. Robinson, auctioneer. Dr. Giles (Commissioner of Crown Lands), Mr Etheridge (Secretary to the "Waste Lands Board), and Mr E. T. Robinson (Secretary to the School Commissioners) were present; and there was a fair attendance of buyers. The following sections were purchased by the applicants, all at the upset prices : —Section No. 16, Keech and Malloy; 27, no bid ; 44, H. Fitzsimons; 49, S. S. Pollock; 89, W. Heinz ; 117, J. and M. Davidson ; 147, G. R, Rudkin ; 188 and 190, P. Duggan ; 191, 192 and 195, J. Mulvihill; 196, 197, 198 and 199, J. Home ; 264, J. and M. Davidson ; 575 and 576, no bid ; 582, 583, and 584, J. Andrews ; 586, 587, 588, 589, 593 and 596, Wesleyan Church ; 744, J. Burrell; 800, 801 and 901, W. Davidson; 803 and 903, G. Mueller ; 817 and 917, J. Preston; 822, 922, 823, 923, 824 and 924, J. and M. Davidson; section unnumbered, Nicholson and Fairburn ; 47, Mrs Ritson; 160, J. M'Whirter ; 186, D. Hannan. The total amount realised by the sale was £454, the total value of the improvements on the sections as estimated by the Education Commissioners, was £3677. Only two sections of the number offered were unsold.

Commodore Edwin telegraphed yesterday as follows:—"Watch barometer; between north-east and north and west. Glass further fall and falling fast, with heavy sea within 10 hours. Indications are bad for much rain."

The Mahinapua left Wellington yesterday afternoon, aud will be despatchod from Greymouth (weather permitting) on her advertised date, next Monday.

As previously mentioned in this journal and now by public announcement, Miss Georgie Smithson will appear on Monday evening next, in her life-like sketches. She has been playing, we are told, to overflowing and delighted audiences in Greymouth; and those who heard her when last in Kumara will no doubt be found again among a much larger audience at the Theatre Royal on Monday, to enjoy a really good evening's entertainment.

All persons who have donned the insignia of the Blue Ribbon are requested to meet at the Templars Hall, Dillman's Town, on Monday eveuing next, the 7th inst., at half-past seven o'clock. The annual tea meeting in connection with the Wesleyan Chuach will take place on Thursday evening next, in the Masonic Hall, commencing at six o'clock. After the tea, a public meeting will be held in the Adelphi Theatre, so that there will be little or no inconvenience sustained in waiting for the removal of tea tables, &c. Addresses will be delivered by ministers of various denominations, and selections of music will be given by a good choir. Mr R. J. Seddon, M.H.R., will preside. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will sell by public auction on Monday next, at the Preston Yards, Greymouth, 40 very nice useful bullocks, 200 grand cross-bred wethers, a filly, and a useful hack.

Specifications and plans for the cleaning and grubbing of sections 3,4, and 5, Kumara Beach Road, may now be seen at Mr Seddon's, Seddon street. Tenders for these works close on Tuesday next—not Wednesday next, as yesterday erroneously printed—at 5 p.m. As.the returns for the Robin Hood, Fidelity, aud Adamastor's consultations

on the Autumn Handicap require to be forwarded by mail on Monday next, all persons who desire to invest should make immediate application to the local agents. So far as the returns already to hand can be relied on as indicating the state of the Colonial balance-sheet for the year (writes the Wellington correspondent of the Otago Daily Times), there is reason to apprehend a larger deficiency in revenue as compared with the estimate than I have previously intimated as likely ; that is to say, Customs will be somewhere about £IIO,OOO short, railways about £60,000, and the beer only £SOOO ; but the actual deficit as against expenditure will not reach £175,000, for the expenditure has been curtailed in various directions, so that it will not come up to the estimate. Present appearances point to a probable net deficit of or £L30,000. Also, I have reason to betieve it is practically certain that the Cabinet will decide to introduce a Bill to amend the Representatfon Act, by amalgamating city constituencies so that each city shall form one electorate, returning several members proportionately to the population.
