CRITICAL SITUATION OF THE GARRISON AND INHABITANTS. FAILURE OF THE CHIEF DIGNAH TO RALLY HIS FOLLOWERS. THE ARABS WOUNDED IN THE LATE BATTLE. (Received March 21, 0.55 a.m.) Cairo, March 19. Great anxiety is felt here for General Gordon, from whom no farther news has yet been received. Reliable intelligence of increasing hostility among the Arab tribes is to hand, and the adherents of El Mahdi are closing round Khartoum from all sides. The situation is considered critical. (Received March 21,11 a.m.) March 20. Latest news to hand from Souakim states that Osman Dignah’s attempts to rally his followers has failed, and he has now left the hills near Tamaneb, and retired into the interior. Information has also reached Souakim that a great number of the rebels who were wounded during the recent battle, but who succeeded in reaching the hills, are now lying in a dying state.
