The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1884.

The Hospital Fete Committee will meet at the Town Hall at nine o’clock this evening, when, as the time is drawing near for the annual festival to rahe funds for the maintenance and sncces.'fnl carrying on of onr local institution, active measures will be taken to curry out the various arrangements comprised in the Fete Committee’s intended programme. For some time past the intentions of the Committee have been made known in the advertisement which now appears at the head of this column ; and in a few days certain members of the Fete Committee will wait upon householders and others to receive such articles as kind friends may have ready to offer to the committee—articles, perhaps, which the present holder has now no use for, but which might be highly prized by other people, and who would readily give a good price for them, knowing that by so doing they would at the same time be benefiting the noblest of onr charitable institutions. The words of an eminent writer are appropriate here, who said—- “ Charity is a universal duty, which it is in every ma s’s power sjmci.lmc-: in practise, since every degree of assistance j given to another, upon proper motives, jis an act of charity. And there is scarcely any man in such a state of nj.de c;Vy i' t !,.■• not, on some i occasions bviicuL nis neighbour.”

It is a little thing To give a cup of water. Yet its draught Of cool refreshment, di’ained by fevered lips, May send a shock of pleasure to the soul More exquisite far than when nectareous

juice Renews the life of joy in happiest hours. A good many ladies, we understand, are zealously preparing fancy work of some kind or other for the fancy goods and curiosity stall in connection with the fete. Let all persons, therefore, who have any articles, from “a needle to an anchor,” which they can easily spare, be prepared to give to the F§te Committee when they may call; the only exception to the foregoing, we are told, are “ grindstones if over one hundred-weight and £SO notes (unless they be Bank of England) j” and we very much doubt if the Committee would even object to receive those. The Sports Committee, who voluntarily offered their services to assist in the good cause, are also making great efforts to promote the success of the fete in so far as athletic enjoyments will be concerned, and which of course always form a very prominent feature in any outdoor festival. The fete is to take place in the Recreation Ground on Easter Monday, 14th April, and will conclude with a concert and ball in the evening, at the Theatre Royal, for which tickets will be procurable from any of the Committee from and after Friday next.
