[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. ENTHUSIASTIC PUBLIC RECEPTION OF HANLAN, THE CANADIAN OARSMAN. I DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT BRISBANE WHARF. TOTAL LOSSES ETIMATED AT £30,000. PROPOSED SECOND TELEGRAPH LINE ACROSS AUSTRALIA. (Received March 17, 8 p.m.) Sydney, March 17. Arrived, this afternoon, the steamship Ringarooma, from Auckland. Edward Hanlan, the Canadian oarsman, was accorded a most enthusiastic aud cordial public reception this morning. The streets were lined with people, fully 12,000 being assembled ; and at Oxford Hotel Hanlan was received by the Mayor, who offered him a hearty welcome to the colony. In returning thanks, Hanlan expressed a strong wish to conclude a match with Trickett be fore making any engagements. Brisbane, March 17. A destructive fire occurred last night at Howard Smith's wharf, which, with the adjacent warehouses and other buildings, was destroyed. It is estimated that the total losses amount to over £30,000. General, is now communicating with the New Zealand Government with the view of arrangements being made for the construction of a second overland telegraph line to Port Darwin from the Gulf of Carpentaria.
