DRAWING LOTS FOR DELIVERANCE.
The Home News records that the main shaft of the White Star steamer Celtic broke in the midst of a huricane, when she was but one day out from New York. To return against fierce, adverse winds was impossible, and after long hours of desperate anxiety the captaiu got his ship under sail and continued his voyage eastward, with the certainty that even if safely performed ifc would be prolonged from days to weeks. While thus battling with the ocean the Celtic was spoken by a freight steamer, which had room for just four passengers, no more. There were 58 on board the Celtic. .On whom should the good luck of speedy deliverance fall ? The momentous queetion was decided by drawing lots. Two of the winners took their prizes, two others sold them by auction, and the four fortunate passengers were landed at Falmouth ten days earlier than the rest of the Celtic's passengers, bringing the news of the accident and of the steamer's safety.
