News received by the Chimborazo from London states that Shaw, Shrewsbury, and Lillywhite are organising a team of professional cricketers to visit Australia and New Zealand next season. >——<, VICTORIA RACING CLUB AUTUMN MEETING. THE CHAMPION STAKES. (Received March 9, 11 a.m.) Melbourne, March 8. The last day’s races of the Victoria Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting came off to-day at Flemiugton. The Champion Stakes, of 25 sovs. each, 10ft., with 1000 added. For three-years old and upwards. Weight for age. The second horse to receive 200sovs. and the third lOOsovs. out of the stake. A good start was effected, Off Color was first to get away, followed closely by Iron Hand, who soon took the lead and made the running for a considerable distance, heading the field by fully fifty lengths, Martini and Commotion being second and third respectively, the others following close together. This order was maintained until the straight was reached, when Iron Hand fell back, beaten. Martini then assumed the lead, and as he passed the Stand the first time round was loudly cheered. Commotion was well lap, and shortly caught and passed Martini. Commotion continued the lead at the far side of the course, and at the Sheds Martini was done, and dropped back. On entering the straight Commotion was still leading, followed closely by Le Grand, Off Color, Sting, and Martini. At the distance Le Grand shot ahead, with Off Color pressing him close, Commotion next ; Le Grand, however, maintained his position, and passed the post half a length ahead of Off Color, who by this time was three lengths ahead of Commotion. The other horses followed in the order named. The race was a grand one thronghont and splendidly won by Le Grand, who was loudly cheered as he came to the weighing paddock. The win was a popular one. The betting at the post was 2 to 1 on Martini, and 8 to 1 against Le Grand. The official time was given as smins. 2G,' / secs. >—< —— CRICKET.—AUSTRALIAN TEAM V VICTORIAN FIFTEEN. (Received March 9, H a.m.) Melbourne, March 8. The match between the Australian team and fifteen of Victoria was re-sumed-to-day. The fifteen continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 240. The highest scores v. eie— Horan, 43; Groubo, 3G. The Australian team then went in, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had put together 113 for six wickets; Midwinter, c 34, Bannerman, b 37, were the top scorers.
