The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1884.

At the Resident Mogistrate’s Court this morning, before H. A. Stratford, Esq., R.M., two children, Elizabeth and Ellen Riordan, aged 7 years and 4 years 9 mouths respectively, were charged with being neglected children, to wit, dwelling with Maria Riordan, a person who has been convicted and is a reputed prostitute. The accused were convicted, and committed to the St. Mary’s Industrial School, Nelson, for a period of seven years from this date, there to be educated in the Roman Catholic faith. The Hospital Fete Committee will meet at the Town Hall at eight oclock this evening. Tenders are required for sawing a quantity of timber for the Taipo bridge timber contract. Specifications can be seen at Mr Foldi’s, Dillman’s Town, to whom tenders must be sent in by six o’clock on Friday evening. Miss Georgie Smithson, the talented change character artiste, described as the “ Female Maccabe,” is announced to give a night’s entertainment at the Theatre Royal next Saturday. This lady’s range of character is said to be very great, and if she be half so entertaining as Frederic Maccabe a very enjoyable evening may be expected.

Late last evening, or rather early this morning, (the West Coast Times states) it was reported to the police that a miner known as “Joe the Whale ” or “Joe the Whaler,” was found at the bottom of a shaft at Rimu, with his neck broken. The deceased was missed since Sunday last.

A young man named Walter George Smith was arrested at the Bluff on the 23rd ult., at midnight, charged on warrant with wife desertion at Wellington, where he has left a wife and three children. He had in his company a young woman, with whom, it appears, he was bound for the Old Country.
