(Received Marcli 3, noon.) Albany, March 3. Arrived, yesterday, at King George’s Sound, the P. and O. steamship Mirzapore, with the English mails via Brindisi, dated London, 25th January. Sydney, March 1. Mr G. H. Reid has resigned his portfolio of Minister for Education. The funeral of Dr. Badham took place yesterday, and was very largely attended. (Received March 3, 10 p.m.) Adelaide, March 3. A destructive fire occurred to-day at Cowell Brothers 5 timber yard, Norwood, resulting in the total destruction of the stock and premises. The adjoining buildings were also destroyed. The insurances amount to £15,000, but the loss is considerably greater. The disaster is supposed to be the work of an incendiary, Melbourne, March 3, The London Chartered Bank of Australia at Horsham, a town in the north-west of the colony, was broken into by burglars last night. The safe was found open, and over £5500 had been abstracted, chiefly in notes, the numbers of which are unknown. ♦ . VICTORIA RACING CLUB AUTUMN MEETING. The following are the results of the principal events : LE6ER STAKES. Martini-Henri ... ... 1 Off Color ... ... 2 Archie ... ... ... 3 The other starters were Wheatmeat and Sardius. Martini-Henri led past the stand the first time, and increased his lead to six lengths at the river turn, Off Color following. On entering the straight Martini-Henri was still leading and came in an easy winner, hard held, by a length. Time, 3mins. 24|secs. Martini-Henri was ridden by Henry Hales. NEWMARKET HANDICAP. Matua ... ... ... 1 Le Grand ... ... 2 Claptrap... ... ... 3 Segenhoe and Matua led at the tan crossing, Olga, Victress, and Lord Wilton next. At the straight Claptrap and Le Grand emerged from the crowd and passed Segenhoe, who held second place. Matua, however, retained bis lead, and came in an easy winner by u nook, Time, Imia, IS^secs.
