The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1884.

The poll for the election of five gentlemen to constitute the Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of the Borough of Kumara for the ensuing year was taken yesterday at the Town Hall, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. There were originally eight persons nominated, but two having subsequently withdrawn, only six names appeared on the voting papers. Shortly after six o’clock Mr A. Skilton (Returning Officer for the Borough) announced the result, which is as follows ; O’Hagan, John 55 Maloney, Michael ... ... 55 Burger, Henry 50 Nicholson, William... ... 40 Hannah, John 39 Campbell, Alexander C. ... 36 The official notification appears elsewhere. The first quarterly meeting for the election of a chairman and the issue of licenses, and the transaction of licensing business will take place on Wednnsday, March sth, at noon. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council takes place this evening. The Rev. Father Devoy is expected to arrive in Kumara by the coach from Christchurch on Saturday afternoon, and friends of the much-esteemed and respected priest who may be desirous of giving him a suitable reception are requested to meet in St. Patrick’s schoolroom, at seven o’clock this evening. We observe the Rev. Father Devoy is announced to celebrate first Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, at nine o’clock on Sunday morning. Second Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.ra. by the Rev. Father Walshe. In the apportionment of the available sum of L 70,680 for main roads and bridges amongst the counties and local bodies entitled to the same in terms of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, we find the sum of L 6268 is allocated to the West Coast, and out of this amount LSOOO alone is for the Borough of Greymouth, towards the building of the Cobden bridge. Allocation for bridges on main roads :—Grey County, L 7 9; Borough of Greymouth, LSOOO. Allocations for road works as distinct from bridges, one-fifth of the sum applied for : —lnangahua County, Lsl ; Grey County, L 39 1; Westland County, L 747. The Union Company’s steamer Omapere is expected to arrive at Greymouth this afternoon, and take her departure for Wellington direct to-morrow. It is proposed to form an Athletic Club in Kumara, and gentlemen willing to join it are requested to attend a preliminary meeting to be held at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening, at eight o’clock. The tendency of athletic exercises to strengthen the muscles of the human frame was so thoroughly demonstrated here recently in Woodyear’s Circus that it requires no effort of persuasion on our part to certify to the useful effects of such exercises, which impart bodily strength and activity to the athlete, and often lead to useful rules of diet and exercise applicable to the ordinary modes of life, as well as imparting vigour and activity to the mind. The ordinary sittings of the Resident Magistrate’s and Warden’s Courts will take place to-morrow morning, after which, we understand, Dr Giles will proceed to Nelson to be present at the sitting of the University Senate. Mr Warden Bird will officiate at the sittings of the Warden’s Courts at Ross and Hokitika during Dr. Giles’ absence. The West Coast Times states that the petition praying for the removal of Warden Giles, which was sent down to him by the Minister of Justice for his remarks, was returned by the Warden, with office copies of the Court records in the cases referred to in the petition. The Warden also challenged inquiry as to the truth of any allegations of partiality. He has now received a reply informing him that “ the Government is satisfied that no inquiry is necessary.” The Argus states that Dr. Giles has received two mouths’ leave of absence, and purnoses taking a trip for the benefit of his health. The marriage of the Hon. Ivo Bligh to Miss Florence Murphy took place at Rupertswood, Victoria, the residence of Sir W, J. Clarke, on Saturday, 9th February. A large number of guests were present. Princess Bridge, over the Yarra, is closed, prior to putting down a traffic gate over the temporary wooden bridge,

A pearl of the value of £IOOO was discovered by M'Kay Bros, at the Northwest Fishery, West Australia. Mr A. J. Lawrence, of Adelaide, bought a block of land at Canning, West Australia, last year, at £1 per acre, and has sold a quarter of it at a profit of £ISOO.
