The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1884.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court, today, before J. O'Hagan and T. Connell, Esqs., J.Ps., Walter Cunningham was charged with the larceny, in December last, of a pair of field-glasses, of the value of £2, the property of James Helliar, a groom at Cameron's stables. John O'Donnell, a farmer's assistant, stated that he had exchanged his watch for the glasses, which the boy said he had won at a shilling raffle. Prisoner stated that Daniel Sheedy, another boy (a witness), sold him the glasses for 5s ; but this statement was not corroborated in any way in evidence, and Cunningham was sentenced to one calendar month's imprisonment with hard labour, in Hokitika Gaol. There were a large number of passengers by the coach yesterday morning for the Bealey and Christchurch. Amongst them were a lady and gentleman concerning whom an interesting announcement appears at the head of this column. With their numerous friends here we wish them a pleasant trip and safe return to their home in Kumara. The coach returned from the Bealey again early this afternoon, with Christchurch and East Coast mails and many passengers. A cablegram from Hong-Kong yesterday afternoon should have read—News is to hand from Pekin that Iso Tsung Tang, the Viceroy of Nanking, has been superseded by Tseng Kwo Tchuan, GovernorGeneral of Canton.—According to Chinese accounts, the population of Nanking was 4,000,000, but a more recent estimate made it 300,000. The population of Canton is stated to be 1,600,000. Tenders are invited by the Westland County Council for tarring the Kapitea bridge, and widening half a mile of the Greenstone - Christchurch Road track. Plans and specifications can be seen at the Council Chambers, Hokitika, and at MrM'Whirter's, Goldsborough. Tenders close on Tuesday, March 11. Sir Thomas and Lady Brassey have returned to England after traveling 11,506 miles in the Sunbeam. "Recent Explorations in the Southern Alps of New Zealand," is the title of a paper by the Rev. W. S. Green, which was to be read before the Royal Geographical, Society at their meeting on January 17.
