BOROUGH METAL.
[to the editor.] Sir—The Borough jam-pot must be overflowing if the Council can affoid to spend about £3O on a good hard road up by L)enfield’s, fit to carry a waggon and ten tons, whilst at the opposite end of Seddon street may be observed horses and drays ploughing their way through ruts and stones on an unfortunate half mile of road, without an ounce of gravel on it, and without one shilling being expended on a perfectly new road. But what strikes me as being so inconsistent in the matter is the fact that a contract is about being called for by the “ Borough Council ” for the maintenance of the borough for the ensuing twelve months. I ask you, sir, can you inform me who has authorised his “ Worship the Mayor ” to have the work done without the sanction of the Council. I think it is nearly time the borough jam-pot was sealed,—l remain, sir, your obedient servant, An Observer. February 15, 1884,
