The poll for the election of a Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of Hohonu took place yesterday, and resulted in the election of Messrs Hayes, Clancy, Caldwell, M'Conuick, and Clarke. G 10 16 A fancy dress ball is announced to take place on Friday, 23rd May, the eve of the Queen’s Birthday. It will be under the patronage and for the benefit of the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade, who are the first to offer to test the practicability of such a ball. We have no doubt it will be a success ; and this early notice will give ladies and gentlemen ample time to prepare their costumes. The annual meeting and installation of officers of the Pacific Lodge of Freemasons, E.C., 1229, was held at the Masonic Hall, Hokitika, on Tuesday afternoon, at four o’clock. The ceremony was performed by Brother John Bevau, R.W.D.G.M., assisted by Brother J. Hudson, D.G.S. W. The following officers were declared elected for the ensuing twelve months: Brothers H. A telegram was received in Grcymouth yesterday conveying the information that the Government lias accepted the services of the Grcymouth Rifles ; and that the enrolment would take place on Monday, the ISth inst. Captain Edwin, altogether out of his customary routine, wired yesterday that there was every indication of obtaining fine weather dining the next 24, and probably for 48 hours, with winds moderate between north-east and south-east. By private letter from Melbourne we (Lyttelton Times) hear that the “Vagabond ’ is having a r i.; after his recent hip* to Kew Hebrides and New Guinea, but intends soon to return to New Zealand for the completion of his tour through the Colony. George Darrell, Richmond Thatcher, and James South, in a boat on Lake Macquarie, narrowly escaped drowning, as the boat filled during the late gale. A man named Barnett, who went from New Zealand to Tasmania about a year ago, shot himself in front of the Treasury at Hobart recently. In a cricket match between trainers and jockeys at Melbourne lately, the former New Zealand rider Roddy M‘lvor scored 40 and 14 out of totals of 114 and 78, while he also took thirteen of the trainers’ wickets in their two innings.
