The reformatory ship Clarence was burned in the Biver Mersey on 16th January. All hands were saved. The iron and steel workers of Great Britain have been notified by their fellow craftsmen of America that agents from the United States will shortly be in England to get workmen, and hopes are expressed that no British will assist in defeating their brethren in America. The jury in the case of William Wolff, on bis trial in London for unlawful possession of explosives, disagreed and were discharged. Mail advices received in London from China state that several Chinese bankers hrve committed suicide owing to the unsettled political situation and the deplorable state of the money market. The British Post Office after September Ist will forward all mails for America by the fastest steamers under the monthly contract, chiefly by way of Queenstown. The mails are to be forwarded, if an agreement is reached, by Southampton mid-weekly fast steamers, which leave there at midnight on Thursday, connecting from London. Schugler, au explorer of equatorial Africa, is reported to be dead. Queen Victoria is about to present a portrait of herself, painted by Princess Beatrice, to the National Portrait Gallery. A sensatiou has been caused by a bequest of £500,000 made by a wealthy London lady to Pope Leo XIII. Rumors of Fenian plots are heard in London on every hand. Cablegrams of January 13th say how or where they originate cannot be ascertained, but it is certain that more than usual credence is given to them. The latest ones say that redoubled vigilance is now bein» exercised at Windsor Castle, and- similar care is taken at the house of Mr Gladstone. The Government buildings are all guarded very closely. The Roman Catholics of England have completed arrangements to begin the erection of a cathedral in Westminster to cost over £500,000, and to be erected within a stone's throw of the Victoria station. The design as approved is similar to the Votire Kerch, Vienna. Charles Santley, a well-known English baritone, was recently married to a wealthy American womau in Vienna. In consequence of the renewal of threats of dynamiters an additional police guard has been placed at the Post Office and other buildings in Glasgow. Portion of the bridge on the mil way between Wi&au ;uul iVostou collapsed
on the sth January, killing 71 men and injuriug many others. Mrs Carey, the informer's widow, declines to leave Great Britain, and asks for safe employment at home.
