The mnil steamer Zealandia, from San Francisco, arrived at Auckland yesterday, two days after contract time. She was, however, late in leaving San Francisco. She has made a very quick passage of 19 days 12 hours, notwithstanding that she experienced a severe hurricane on the 9th and 10th inst., and was hove-to for six hours. She brings only a part of the mail, having only 194 bags for this colony, instead of what is usual, about 400. This is ac?ni!!ifcd for by the fact of the Atlantic stunner Ucniuuiie, having the bulk of the
London mails, breaking down shortly after leaving Liverpool, and being compelled to return. She had not reached Liverpool up to the time the Zealandia sailed from San Francisco. We supply a few telegrams which may be of interest. Persons interested in the election of the Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of Hohonu are reminded that the election takes place to-morrow, Wednesday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Court House, Greenstone, and Mr H. Murphy's cottage, Westbrook, are the polling places. The Christmas Sports Committee had a meeting on Wednesday last, at which there were present Messrs Pearn (in the chair), Thimbleby, Adamson, Fitzsimmons, and Hannah. It was resolved that as Mr Tyrer, was not present to support the protest entered concerning the Tug-of-War, the money be paid to Mr Corby's team. On the motion of Mr Fitzsimmons, seconded by Mr Thimbleby, the balancesheet, as presented, was received and adopted. The Committee decided to offer their services to the Hospital Committee in assisting to get up the fete at Easter for the benefit of the Hospital, and that tha balance they had in hand (£3 19s) should go towards that object. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Secretary and Treasurer, Mr John Hannah, for his services. The Committee also expressed their satisfaction with the efficient manner in which the judge and starter had discharged their duties.
A telegram from the Secretary for Education announces, for the information of those concerned in competition for scholarships, that as no satisfactory arrangements can now be legally made as to the division of the scholarship fund, nothing further can be done until the two new Boards are legally constituted.
It is stated by the Education Department that the income of the old "combined " education district for the month of December, was £BO3 13s 4d, whilst the ordinary expenditure amounted to £lOl2 19s 4d. It is on account of this that the deductions have been made in the payments for December.

Mr H. A. Gordon, Inspector of Mines, is at present at Hokitika on a tour of inspection to that district. He has completed his survey of the tracks and roads in the Grey County, and it is anticipated than not less than £3OOO will be received by the Grey Council in aid of such tracks. We learn from Lieutenant Spence that the new uniforms for the Kumara Volunteer Rifle Company have left Wellington, and may therefore be expected here in a few days. Mr W. C. Gilbert, dentist, may be consulted at Stewart's Hotel, from 11 o'clock to-morrow (Wednesday) morning till 3 in the afternoon of the next day (Thursday), when those who are sufferers from the dull, aching, heavy, sharp, pungent, throbbing, grinding, or lancinating effects of toothache, of whatever degree, character or duration, may find relief in the extraction or stoppage of the decayed teeth ; an may also have new ones substituted.
A sixth share is for sale in Denfield and party's claim. Application is to be made to Mr David Blake, on the ground. There was some excitement yesterday, (says the Times) at the far end of the Rimu rush, occasioned by the discovery that favorable prospects had been obtained in one of the shallow claims recently opened in that direction. A number of claims were marked off and sinking was at once proceeded with. George Knopp, the defendant in the recent " raffle " case at Westport, went to gaol on Wednesday, to serve three months' imprisonment with hard labour, the alternative to the line inflicted.
Mr William King, a relation of Admiral King, has just arrived in Sydney (says a telegram in the Age), after twelve days' journey in a boat from New Zealand. The crew consisted of himself, wife, and two daughters. The boat is 18ft. in length, with mast stepped far forward, and standing big sail only. Mr King is one of the best known yachtsmen in Australia, having cruised in every part of Australia in every kind of boat, and has himself spent upwards of £17,000 in boats and other small crafts for cruising purposes.
