Telegraphic communication is now open between Suez and Souakim (the headquarters of Baker Pasha’s military operations against the Arab and Soudan rebels). Cablegrams are to hand this afternoon concerning the route and flight of Baker Pasha’s forces. The polling for the election of five members to constitute the Licensing Committe for the Licensing District of Arahura is appointed to take place on Saturday next, the 16th day of February, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The polling-places will be found in the Returning Officer’s notice among the advertisements. The following duly qualified persons were this day nominated at StaffordJ, F. Byrne, B. Cox, M. H. Fitzgibbon, B, Lyons, J. Murphy, R. Murray, J. Tennant, J. J. Williams. For the Licensing District of Hohonu the poll for the election of a Licensing Committee will take place on Wednesday next, 13th inst., at the Court House, Greenstone, and at Murphy’s Cottage, Westbrook, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The following are the names of the candidates : John Caldwell, Michael Clancy, Daniel Clarke, John Hayes, Denis M'Cormick, William Morgan. In reference to educational matters in Westland, and the seizure of property belonging to the Education Board, the Sheriff of Westland gives public notice that all manner persons, except such as shall be thereunto lawfully authorised by her Majesty the Queen, are warned against entering upon, taking possession of, or otherwise interfering with the property vested in the Education Board of the District of Westland previous to the Ist January last, said property having become bona vacantia, and now taken possession of for the benefit of the public, and her said Majesty. The Government steamer Hinemoa, with his Excellency the Governor on board, passed the ports northward yesterday at noon, on her passage from the Sounds to Wellington. She signalled—- “ All well on board.” The Union Company’s s.s. Omapereleft Auckland yesterday for Greymouth where she will be due on Monday. She is announced to leave for Lyttelton direct on Wednesday next. The Mahinapua is on her way round the ports and will leave Wellington to-morrow for Greymouth. Her date of departure is Tuesday next, for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The first of a course of sermons on “Spirits and the Spirit World,” to be delivered in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sabbath evenings, by the new pastor, the Rev. George Hay, will be preached to-morrow evening, the service commencing at seven o’clock. The mysterious phenomena which under the name of modern spiritualism has lately attracted

so much public attention will doubtless draw good congregations to hear the reverend gentleman mate some explanations concerning them. The first subject, for to-morrow night, is “ The Spirit World.” The Rev. J. W. 0. Heine (Lutheran Pastor) will conduct divine service in the Presbyterian Church, Third street, tomorrow afternoon, at one o’clock. All Lutherans are cordially invited. The accident which occurred to James Boyd, miner, of Blue Spur, appears to have resulted much more seriously than was at first supposed, as he has received a fracture of both thighs. At a meeting of the directors of the Greymouth Tramway Company last evening, at Greymouth, Mr Henry S. Castle, of Maori Gully, was appointed Secretary, in the room of Mr E. A. Burke, who resigned. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will hold their fortnightly sale at the Preston Yards, Greymouth, on Monday next, when they will offer prime quality bullocks, and a large number of sheep and pigs.
