Arrived, last evening, the Orient steamship Garonne, from Plymouth, with mails via Suez and Brindisi, which left London on December 21. 350,000 bushels of wheat available this season for export from South Australia. Melbourne, January 30. Sailed, on Monday afternoon, the Union steamship Rotomahana, for the Bluff. (Received January 31, 1.25 p.m.) Sydney, January 30. Sailed, on Tuesday afternoon, the steamship Wakatipu, for Wellington. A largely-attended demonstration took place last night in opposition to the Immigration policy of the Government. It was decided to present a monster petition to Parliament, praying for the cessation of the immigration scheme. The taxation set forth in the Colonial Treasurer’s recent Budget statement is being warnly criticised, and opposition to its proposals is daily increasing. [Per s.s. Manipouri, at the Bluff.] Melbourne, January 21. A shocking tragedy was perpetrated at Prafaran on Saturday night, Chas. Rice, a tailor, beat his wife to death with a billet of wood, and severely injured his daughter. The highest individual innings ever made in Australia was made on Saturday by W. Bruce, 328 not out. A fall of earth occurred at a mine at Homebush on Friday, by which thirteen men were buried alive. Two of the number seeing indications of danger ran to warn their comrades, and so cut off their own escape. They fortunately discovered a small aperture, through which they emerged after great difficulty. But the affair threatened to become a repetition of the Creswick disaster, as debris takes a long time to clear away.
