President Kruger, of the Transvaal, has suggested a compromise in the matter of the modification of the Transvaal frontier line- proposed by the British Government, in order that certain native chiefs might be afforded the protection of British rule. (Received January 19, 1 p.m.) The sum of £200,000 in gold has been withdrawn from the Bank of England, for Australasia, and it is expected that further withdrawals will shortly be made. (Received January 19, 0.50 a,m.) Madrid, January 17. The Spanish Ministry was defeated in the Cortes last night by a large majority and demanded a dissolution, threatening to resign unless an appeal to the country was granted. (Received January 19, 1 p.m.) January 18. A new Ministry is being formed by Senor Canovas. The present crisis has arisen in consequence of a disunion having occurred among the members of the Liberal party in the Cortes. Hong Kong, January 18. It has transpired that, yielding to British representations, the Chinese Government has suspended the operations for blocking the Canton Rivers with torpedoes.
