COSMOPOLITAN BRASS BAND.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the establishment of a Cosmopolitan Brass Band in this district was held in the Town Hall last evening. Mr R. J. Seddon, occupied the chair, and briefly stated the object of the meeting. Mr D. Williams moved the first resolution—“ That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable and almost a necessity that there should be a public bond for Kumara and Dillman’s Town, so that at holiday and other times the inhabitants shall not have their enjoyments and recreation marred for want of a band and music; and that the name of the band shall be the ‘Kumara and Dillman’s Town Brass Band.’” The motion was carried. Mr Campbell moved “That the Borough Council, the Rifle Volunteers, the Fire Brigade, each of the Friendly Societies, the Orange Lodge, and the Amateur Dramatic Club be written to and asked to co-operate, either by granting a subsidy towards procuring instruments and uniform, or by appointing some of their members to canvass the district for subscriptions towards defraying the cost of the instruments and uniform; also that the Local School Committee be asked to give the Kumara School-room for the use of the band to practice therein.” The motion was seconded by Mr.D. Williams, and carried. Mr W. Morris moved—“ That a Committee, consisting of Mr R. J. Seddon, M.H.R., his Worship the Mayor, the County Chairman, the Rev. C. Hay, Rev. J. Hosking, Rev. J. Holland, the W.M. Masonic Lodge, the W.M. Orange Lodge, the KG-. Oddfellows Lodge, the C.R. of theForesteis Lodge, and the Captain Volunteer Fire Brigade, with Messrs Bass, W. Barnett, A. Miller, W. Morris, G. Mansfield, W. Wells, J. J. Williams, Campbell and Marshall, five to form a quorum, be appointed a Committee to give effect to the wishes of this meeting, and to take the necessary steps to start the Band.” The motion was seconded by Mr R. Toms, and carried. Mr Toms proposed spectful letter be written to those gentlemen new having in their possession certain instruments formerly belonging to the Dillman Town public band, and that they be asked to hand over the said instruments to the committee, and also to assist in forming the new band. Also, that Mr Bass be written to and asked to take charge of the Band; and that persons desirous of joining the band be requested to send in their names and the instruments they have in their possession or are desirous of playing, either to Mr Bass or the Secretary, on or before Friday, the 25th day of January.” The motion was seconded by Mr Walker, and adopted. Mr Toms suggested that in the event of a Band being formed and instruments purchased, steps, should be taken to appoint Trustees in whom the Band property might be invested. The Chairman said that was a matter which the Committee would deal with. The Chairman then asked Mr Bass, who was present, if he would be prepared to take charge of the Band. Mr Bass stated that he would be willing to do so provided his services were paid for; doubtless some who would join the Band would require instruction in music. The, Chairman said it would not be expected of Mr Bass to devote his time to teaching music without some remuneration. This concluded the business of the public meeting, and those of the Committee appointed who were present then proceeded to business. At the Committee' meeting which followed, Mr Seddon was appointed Chairman, and Mr Dove Secretary, both temporarily. It was resolved to open a 'subscription list, in accordance with the resolution passed at the public meeting. The Secretary was instructed to write to the public bodies, Friendly Societies, and those gentlemen who had been appointed on the Committee to assist in forming the Band.
