THE EDUCATION DIFFICULTY.

THE BOARD DECLARED DEFUNCT. A correspondent of the Grey River Argus telegraphed from Wellington yesterday as follows : Messrs Fitz Gerald and Rae had a long interview with Mr Dick to-day, ending very satisfactorily to them. The Board will he regarded as defunct, and the opinion of the Attorney-Gene-ral is that it was absolutely defunct after it declined to open the ballot papers. It will therefore be altogether ignored in future. Payments of any kind except salaries will not be made until Parliament meets, when Seddon’s Act will at once be brought into operation. Salaries will be paid if possible to committees, and if not possible, to someone in Westland appointed to pay salaries until the House meets. Mr Rae referred to the stock of boobs and the property of the Board, and said it ought to be carefully preserved in the meantime, and Dick said that Government had not lost sight of that. The interview then terminated. Reference was made to the unfortunate position of bona fide contractors and others to whom just debts were owing, but the Minister did not see his way to do anything more than indicated. r i’lv Roiie.toi'-Genp id and At! i nevGcncrai both coincide in the opinion ,

that nothing more can be done, and they state distinctly that the action of the Board in refusing to comply with the law makes them defunct.
