The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1884.

Our cablegraphic news last evening and to-day is of more than ordinary significance. The intelligence that the King of Annam has tendered complete submission to France, and has endorsed the treaty entered into with the French Commissioner by his predecessor, will go a.great way probably in solving the Tonquin question ; and as China is reported to have recently made some further concession in the demands relating to the neutral zone, there is some prospect of the stoppage of bloodshed in Annam and Tonquin, the aversion of a French -war with China, and a peaceful solution of the whole question.—At Madagascar, too, the French seem to have been triumphant, latest news from that island announcing that the Malagasies have accepted the ultimatum of the French Commander, and have agreed to cede to France the northern portion of Madagascar.—A terrible calamity has befallen twenty-seven nuus and pupils in a Convent at Belleville, Illinois. A fire broke out in the Convent, and before assistance could reach them, all perished in the flames.—The state of affairs in Egypt", particularly at Soudan, has led to a political crisis, and the members of the Egpptian Ministry have, in consequence, tendered their resignations to the Khedive.
