A Frenchman attempting to cross the English Channel in a balloon was carried northward, and descended in the North Sea, where he was rescued by a passing vessel. Small, a Parnellite, has been elected unopposed for the vacancy in the representation of Connty Wexford in the House of Commons. (Received June 15, 3 p.m.) June 14. The trial of the dynamite conspirators, at the Old Bailey,. concluded today. Four of the prisoners, Dr. Gallagher, Whitehead, Wilson, and Cartin, were. found guilty and sentenced to penal servitude for life. Bernard Gallagher and Ausburghe were acquitted. In the House of Commons to-day, the Hon. Mr Gladstone, in reply to a question, stated that Government are about to send an envoy to the Transvaal to negotiate for the settlement of Native troubles. (Received June 14, 4.40 p.m.) St. Petersburg, June 13. Three Nihilists, who were arrested iu April last and condemned to death, have had their sentences commuted to penal servitude for life. Several others who were condemned to lengthy terms of imprisonment have had their sentences reduced. + —. . LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. INTERCOLONIAL BRIDGE OPENING CEREMONY. THE QUESTION OF FEDERATION. ELECTRIC LIGHTING THE HOUSES OF ASSEMBLY. (Received June 14, 10.15 p.m.) Melbourne, June 14. The intercolonial bridge across the river Murray at Albury was opened today. The demonstration took place at Albury, and addresses were presented to the Marquis of Nonnanby and to Lord Loftus. Among those present were members of the Victorian and New South Wales Ministries and Legislative Assemblies, Judges and Mayors of the principal towns, with 800 invited guests. The National Anthem was sung by the school children, and the streets of the town were gaily decorated. After the formal opening of the bridge a banquet was given, at which fully a thousand persons were present. In the railway sheds adjoining, a ball will take place to-morrow evening* (Received June 15, 1 p.m.) June 15. In the speeches delivered at the Albury railway demonstration yesterday, frequent reference were made to the question of federation, Mr Service, in the course of his address, intimated that he would take an early opportunity of inviting New South Wales to consider the proposal of political union with Victoria. The speech was warmly applauded. The House of Assembly has been successfully lighted with the Lane incandescent electric lamps. (Received June 14, 8.50 p.m.) Sydney, June 14. The libel case, Anderson v. Proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald, is still proceeding. Sailed, this afternoon, the P.M.S. City of Sydney, for San Francisco via Auckland, with specie valued at £14,500 ; and the Union steamship Haitroto, for Welingtou via Newcastle.
