The election of two Auditors was proceeding when we went to press. Very little interest was manifested in the election. At 4.40 p.m. there were polled 64 votes out of vbout 160 possible. The poll will close at 6 p.m. There was not a quorum of Borough Councillors present at the Town Hall at 8 o'clock last evening, when the ordinary meeting was to have been held, and his Worship the Mayor postponed the sitting till 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Notice is given that the Burgess Roll and Defaulters List are now open for inspection at the office of the Town Clerk, during office hours. All objections thereto must be lodged with that functionary not later than Friday, the 15th June. The following tenders were received foa the Taipo bridge timber contract: —Accepted : Brown and Howe, Kumara, £2186. Declined : M'Kenzieand Sutherland, Kumara, £2368; J. Maher, Hokitika, £2512; H. Francis, Hokitika, £2585 ;W. White, Hokitika, £3291; D. Cullen and Co., Hokitika, £3422. From a private source the Argus learned that "the s.s. Murray carried a southwest gale with her to Farewell Spit, where the Charles Edward was lying under shelter. She has doubtless the English mail aboard, but it is doubtful in the present state of the weather to say when it may arrive." Tenders for the supply of sawn and squared timber for the Taipo bridge are extended till Wednesday next, the 6th June. A man named William Nassau Morton was charged at the Greymouth Police Court on Tuesday with having, on the 17th May, at River-view Terrace, near Maori Creek, feloniously stolen and taken away gold and washdirt, the property of John Wilson, John Rusk, James Three other charges of a similar nature were also laid against Morton. There are no fewer than twenty witnesses subpoenaed. Mr Thomas, chemist, Auckland, who was burnt out three days ago, has not been seen since the fire. Vickers, who escaped from Dunedin Gaol on Wedneuday morning, has been re-captured. He had been hiding in ferns at Mullocky Gully, 20 miles from Dunedin. The body of the poor fellow Clough, who was drowned lately in the Manganui river, was found in a hole 25ft. deep with a quicksand bottom. Only the hands were visible. The diver sank down to his helmet in trying to recover the body, but was, ho-.vavjr, ha::led up with his burden.
