LITERARY INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the Committee of the Kumara Literary Institute was held in the Committee-room, Main street, on Saturday evening; present —Mr Janion (Yice-Preideut), Messrs Stockman, A. Miller, Evans, Chisholm, Dnckworth, Dennett, and Mr R. Wylde (Hon. Sec.). The minutes of the previous meeting were approved of. The members appointed to canvass the town and Lead gave in their reports. The town canvassers were successful, reporting several new subscribers ; the Lead canvassers reported that the long-continued dry weather had proved fatal to their success, but many whom they had visited promised substantial aid when more suitable weather should set in to give an impetus to their operations for procuring gold. The Secretary reported a balance in hand of £l3 odd. Messrs Janion, Woodward, Miller, Chisholm, and Dennett were appointed a committee to select new books to be added to the Library ; their selections to be submitted for the approval of the Committee. Several members of the Committee reported that the practice was common among persons—and some of then nonsubscribers too—of taking away newspapers and periodicals before they had lain on the table a few days, and sometimes even only an hour or two; the rules of the Institute allowed of no such liberty, and it was desirable to put a stop to snch practices. On the motion of Mr Dennett, seconded by Mr Stockman, it was resolved, subject to the consent of the owner of the building, that a partition about 4 feet in height, with rail on top, be put across the Reading Room. Mrs Phelan’s account for rent, &c., amounting to £l2 16s 6d, was passed for payment.
