THE SUPERVISION OF THE EXTENSION OF THE HOSPITAL.

The Editor does not, necessarily, adopt the opinions expressed by correspondents.

[to the editor.] Sir—ln reply to Mr John White’s letter in your Wednesday night’s issue, in which he tries to clear the reputation of the Hospital Committee of some “ dark hints ” which he says I threw out in a letter of mine in your last Monday’s issue, I only wish to say that I consider his attempt most hollow and vague. Of course he admits that £ls were paid for drawing a plan and supervising the extension of the Hospital, but he does not say to whom, or if the expenditure was previously authorised by the Committee, I may state for Mr White’s information, on the best of authority, that this expenditure was never authorised by said Committee. He goes on to say, that although a well-wisher of the institution, I seem to be totally ignorant of the working of the Hospital or the most public matters connected with it. I must admit that I am totally ignorant that this responsible Committee, or rather a portion of it, can coolly pay an amount of £ls to one of its members, without the expenditure being first authorised by said Committee, and then coolly hush it up with grocers,’ bakers,’ butchers,’ and other previously authorised accounts.

No ! no ! Mr John White ; it will not do; and although I here beg to state that I as well as the general public believe Mr White to be one of the most zealous, honest, and hard-working members of the Committee, still I maintain, for the interest of the institution, and to satisfy subscribers, the Committee should give a fuller explanation than Mr White attempted in his letter. For myself, I am satisfied for having brought the matter fully before the public and the Committee, and have only done what I' think right as a. subscriber and well-wisher of our local Hospital. 1 will say no more on the subject until after the next meeting of the Hospital Committee; till then I still b(?g to remain, sir, yours, «fec., A Well-wisher of our local Hospital. .
