THE SUPERVISION OF THE EXTENSION OF THE HOSPITAL.

[to the editor.] Sir—Being chairman at last meeting of the Hospital Committee, I take the liberty of replying to " A Wellwisher," not so much for his information, but to clear the reputation of the Committee, of some dark hints he has thrown out. In the first place £ls was passed for payment, for drawing the plan, and supervising the extension of the Hospital. Tf he was a well-wisher of the Hospital, he could have inquired the particulars from the Secretary or any one who was at the meeting, instead of rushing into print; Again, although a well-wisher of the institution, he seems totally.ignorant of the working of the Hospital, or the most public matters connected with it, as he asks why the £ls was not published in the Kumara. Times. He might as well ask why the monthly accounts of the grocer, baker, butcher, milkman, doctor, wardsman, cook, &c, &c, are not published. The gross amount of the monthly expenditure was and is always published, of which the £ls formed a part. As to the Committee being afraid to let their proceedings known, I may inform " YVell-wisher" there is no hole and corner work with the Hospital Committee, as all their meetings are held with open doors to the public. My friend says, "it is every member's duty to do all in his power to forward the interest of the institution." I shall go further than that, and say, it is every individual's duty in the district liesides, being subscribers. The Committee have to work hard to keep the institution afloat. There will be an election of Committee in two months, aud as " Wellwisher," says " the sooner the affairs of the Hospital are in better hands the better," he will have an opportunity along with others—" better hands " of managing the "affairs." I, along with others have been on the Committee for a considerable period, and spent a deal of time in connection with the Hospital, and am sorry to say I find it an unthankful billet. Tf " Well-wisher" desires any further information through the medium of your paper let him subscribe his name in full, so that I can have a proper go at him. John White. Dillman's Town, May 8, 1883.
