THE SUPERVISION OF THE EXTENSION OF THE HOSPITAL.
[to the editor.] Sir —Could you inform your readers if it is true that at the last meeting of the Hospital Committee £ls was passed for payment to a member of the said Committee, for supervising the extension of the Hospital. If it should be true, then all I can say is that the sooner the affairs of our Hospital are in better hands the better. It seems to me preposterous that some of the members should worry themselves about in trying to rise funds for the said institution, and at the same time coolly pass a sum of fifteen pounds to one of its members—and for what ? Simply because he has done his duty as a com-mittee-man, and no more; for it is every member’s duty to try and do all in his power to forward the interest of the said institution. And is it because this member should volunteer to draw up a bit of a plan, or rather copy a part of Mr Eissenhardt’s old plan—which almost every member of the Committee could and would have most cheerfully done free of charge—that he should dip his hand in the already scanty purse of the Hospital ? It would be a nice state of affairs if every member of the Committee was to put in a claim for the days, aye, and even nights, they have spent in trying to supplement the funds of this institution. However, I think I have said enough on this subject at present, I only wish to ask one more question, on behalf of subscribers, and that is. How is it that this vote of money was omitted from the minutes of the proceedings of the Committee as published in the Kumara Times last Wednesday 1 Are the Committee afraid to let their proceedings be known to the public ; or is it too much trouble to the Secretary to send a more lengthy report to your paper 1 for I am sure that yon, Mr Editor, would be only too glad to let the pablic know how the affairs of one of their most cherished institutions are managed. Hoping you will give these few lines space in your valuable paper, I remain, yours, &c., A Well-wisher of our local Hospital. Kumara, May 7, 1883. [This is the first we have heard or seen of this transaction. We shall look to the Committee for an explanation.— Ed. K.T.]
