The trial of Laurence Hanlon and Darnel Delaney, for attempting to murder Field, a juryman in Hynd's case in November last, will be commenced at Dublin to-day; and upon the conclusion of the case against them, the remainder of the prisoners who arc charged with conspiracy in the Phoenix Park murders will be arraigned. It is announced that Sir 11. Parkes, Ambassador to the Japanese Court, has been appointed to succeed Sir T. F. Wade, British Minister at Pekin. (Received May 4, 2.30 p.m.) Evening. James Fitzharris, who recently was acquitted of the murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr Buvke is being retried as an accessory to that crime, and the grand jury has returned true bills against him. It is now stated that " Number 1" is John Walsh, one of the former Secretaries of the Land League, or Sheridan, the alleged negotiator of the Kilmainham treaty, both of whom are now in America; and the rumor is current that the American Government has consented to their extradition. William Moroney and James Mullett have confessed to their complicity in the conspiracy to murder Cavendish and Burke. New York, May 3. Cardinal MacCloskey, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of this city, has publicly expressed his approval of the decisions of the recent Irish Convention at Philadelphia. [special to press association.] London, April 26. Archbishop Croke, of Cashel, has been summoned to Rome, to consult with the Pope in reference to the condition of affairs in Ireland. Apiil 27. At the Irish Convention now Bitting in Philadelphia, the dynamite faction is gaining oonfidence. Daniel Egan is satisfied to refer the League's accounts to an auditing committee. The health of her Majosty the Queen is gradually improving. April 29. Lieut.-General C. A. Stephenson, C. 8., succeeds Lieut.-General Sir Archibald Alison, C. 8., in his command in Egypt. Th" Hawaiian Government have protested against the exc ssive emigration of Chinese to th« j Sandwich Islands. A threat has I>mmi made to blow up Guildhall on the 6th of May; extra guards have therefore been placed on duty. April 30. A disturbance has occurred between the native population at Port Said, and two persons have been killed and thirty
wounded. The marines from two of the Mediterranean Fleet, the Iris and Falcon, were landed along with the Gatling guns, and it is believed that these measures averted a very serious massacre. The " Republic Francais" believes that New Guinea will be made a penal settlement, and it treats the annexation as an accomplished fact. At a caucus of the dynamite faction in America, O'Donovan Rossa declared that the plans for carrying out further outrages were matured. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. FIRE ON BOARD THE LEICESTER CASTLE. TELEGRAPH AND POSTAL RATES. THE POSTAL CONFERENCE. (Received May 4, 1.50 p.m.) Melbourne, May 4. Arrived, the Manapouri, from the Bluff. A fire broke out last night about midnight in the store-room of the ship Leicester Castle, lying at Sandridge. It was fortunately soon discovered, and suppressed. A lad has been arrested who is believed to have caused the fire. - The Melbourne and Sydney Chambers of Commerce have united with the view of urging the Postal Conference at Sydney to reduce the rates on telegrams. Sydney, May 4. The Postal Conference is now sitting here. It is probable that in addition to the question of joining in a Postal Union the Conference will consider the intercolonial postage and telegraphic rates, and charges on cablegrams to England.
