In the House of Commons last night precedence was voted to the Affirmations in Lieu of Oaths Bill upon the motion of Mr Gladstone. The customary Whitsuntide recess commences on Friday, 11th inst., and Parliament will reassemble on the 21st. James Fitzharris, cabdriver, who has been identified as having been employed by the Phoenix Park murderers, will be tried for conspiring to murder Lord F. Cavendish and Mr Burke. The trial of Edward M'Caffrey, one the alleged four actual assassins, commences at Dublin to-day. (Received May 3, 1 p.m.) Tenders for the Tasmanian half million loan were opened to-day, and were found to amount to the exact sum required. The average of the tenders is £9B 10s, being 10s above the fixed minimum. Patrick Delaney and Thomas Caffrey, two of the Phoenix prisoners, have confessed to their complicity in the murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke, and have been sentenced to death, Cairo, May 2. Lord Dufferin has started from this city for Constantinople, bis mission to Egypt having been completed. [special to press association.] London, April 26. At the Irish Convention in Philadelphia, many delegates refrained from censuring the dynamite policy. The American Cabinet is discussing the necessity of taking measures to prevent persons from making inflammatory speeches. It is believed in official circles that the British Government will sanction the annexation of New Guinea by Queensland. It is announced that the Queensland loan will be placed on the market in the first week in May. April 27. The ship British Commerce, which sank in the Channel on Tuesday night, had no passengers ; she had 2100 tons of cargo. The captains of both vessels state that they did not see each others’ lights. April 28. The Irish Convention in America has resolved to adopt Mr Parnell's platform, by which all the Irish societies will be unified, but the extreme party
in the Convention have refused to concur in the decision, and some violent scenes have resulted. The O’Donovan Rossa faction threaten to withdraw and take separate action. Devine, the Dublin approver, has now divulged the operations of the Vigilance Committee in arranging the attempted murder of Judge Lawson. The murderers of Cox and other four persons have been arrested in consequence of Devine’s statements. Or. Crooke, Archbishop of Cashel, has been summoned to Rome and censured by the Pope for supporting Mr Parnell. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. NEW SOUTH WALES LAND LAWS INQUIRY. THE MILBURN CREEK COPPER MINE AFFAIR. NEW SOUTH WALES PARLIAMENT PROROGUED. THE SUNDAY QUESTION. (Received May 2, 12.45 p.m.) Sydney, May 2. Messrs Augustus Morris, and George Rankin, Commissioners appointed to inquire into the working of the land laws of New South Wales, have made made their report to Government. It strongly condemned the effect of the existing Land Acts. The Legislative Assembly has passed a motion rescinding the resolution of the Bth of November, 1881, censuring Mr Baker, late Minister of Mines, for his connection with the Milburn Creek Copper Mine award. (Received May 2, 9.40 p.m.) Parliament was prorogued by his Excellency the Governor to-day. Lord Loftus stated that the revenue of the colony was in a very satisfactory state, and fully reaching the Treasurer’s estimate. Melbourne, May 2. At a meeting of the Victoria Racing Club to-day, it was decided to add 1000 sovs. to the Melbourne Cup, making 1500sovs. added money, and that the winner of the Victorian Derby must carry 71b penalty for the Melbourne Cup. It was also resolved to withdraw the Champion Stakes from the progaamrae of the New Year’s Day Meeting, and to substitute in its place two races to be called the Bagot Stakes and the Standish Plate, the winner of the latter to receive 500 sovs. The race for the Champion Stakes is hereafter to be run at the Autumn Meeting in March, the added money being as at present lOOOsovs. for the first horse and 200sovs. for the second. (Received May 3, 1 p.m.) May 3. There is much discussion regarding the Sunday question. A monster meeting is to be held at the Town Hall tonight in favor of the opening of the Library on Sundays as well as the Picture Gallery and Museum, and an opposition meeting is to be held on Monday. The state of James Francis’ health is now reported to be very precarious.
