• —♦ By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. BRITISH AND FOREIGN. ANNEXATION OF NEW GUINEA. THE PHCENIX PARK MURDERS.— TRIAL OF TIMOTHY KELLY. THE CORONATION OF THE CZAR. (Received April 23, 0.40 a.m.) London, April 21. In the House of Lords last evening, Lord Carnarvon, formerly Secretary of State for the Colonies, reviewed the question of New Guinea, and in the course of his speech vindicated the motives which prompted the recent action of the Queensland Government. Lord Derby, in reply, stated that the matter had. been brought under the notice of the Colonial Office months ago by Mr Thomas Archer, the Queensland Agent-General, who advanced strong reasons for annexing the island, and asked whether tne Supreme Government would section it, stating that the Queensland Government was prepared to provide for the necessary expenditure of governing of island. Sir A. Kennedy has been requested to report upon the question, and his despatches were still awaited. Lord Derby stated that
the news that the agent of the Queensland Government had taken possession of the island had therefore caused great surprise, no pledge having been given that such an action would be sanctioned. The jury in the case of Timothy Kelly, the third Phoenix Park prisoner, have been unable to agree upon a verdict, and retired until Monday. Recent telegrams are to hand from St. Petersburgh stating that the coronation of the Czar will take place on May 27, the date previously fixed, and not June 10, as announced on the 16th. The Times, however, in its issue this morning, considers the report a hoax. (Received April 23, noon.) San Francisco, April 20. The Pacific Mail steamship Australia arrived from Auckland yesterday. The Italians assert that the researches made of New Guinea by Signor Dalbertis, the explorer, has hastened the annexation of that country by the Queensland Government. The unsettled condition of affairs in Africa will likely delay the departure of Sir Hercules Robinson from the Cape Colony, The Right Rev. C. W. Sanford, Bishop of Tasmania, has been presented by his late congregation at Gibraltar with a silver vase and a cheque for £I2OO. April 18, Another of the Invincibles has been arrested for complicity in the Park and other murders. The Arabs are reported to be fighting among themselves in the vicinity of Aden. Troops have been despatched to restore order. H.M. Dragon has been detained at Aden. Government House, Ottawa, has been threatened by the Fenians. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. HOTELS IN NEW SOUTH WALES TO BE CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. (Received April 23, noon) Sydney, April 23.
