PRINCE BISMARCK’S AILMENT.
Prince Bismarck has been compelled at last to own his subjection to the common lot, and to confess that he is mortal. The attack of tic doloureux under which he is labouring at this moment is one of the most painful kind. The spasms described by the late Dr. Heavyaides as “ a grip of some foul demon seeking to twist the nei ves of the cheek and forehead into a knot ” seize upon the Iron Chancellor at the most inopportune moments, preventing
the conclusion of his speeches, and causing him to writhe in unutterable pain. “ I have nothing but the power of wi11, ,, he has been heard to say, “to aid me in the desire I feel, while under pressure of this abominable torture that alone prevents me from throwing up all responsibility of government and retiring to Varzin, there to live in peace and quiet to the end.” It seems that ever since the existence of his malady has become known he has been daily receiving all kinds of remedies despatched from every part of Europe. From England in particular, airive endless packages, containing bottles of all colours, shapes, and sizes. “ Some of these,” says the patient, “ give temporary relief, butvnone afford more than a few hours’ respite from the excruciat. ing agony of the contraction of the facial nerves, which none but those who have suffered from it can describe.”
